What's up with the Blah and Stuff?

The origin of the name "BlahStuff" is actually quite simple.

It mostly comes from my career as a geek. I've been scripting the web since 1995 or so. And whether you're hacking some JavaScript, ASP, or ColdFusion, you have to come up with variable names. While I was working at Digital back in 1997, I noticed I had a tendency to play with my variable names. If I could, I would generally give them obvious, meaningful names like arrImages or pageTitle, but if it was just a temporary variable that didn't really matter in the big scheme of things, I would often name it tom or thingy.

I also enjoy saying things like "Y'know... The thing with the thing in it?" or "And then we did some... stuff." I have fun with over-generalization!

It was around the same time that I decided I needed a web site. (I didn't grok blogging until 1999, but the site was supposed to have music and movie reviews and stuff like that. Never really happened, but whatever.) While considering domain names I ended up focusing on my habit of making generic names. I often used blah and stuff as a pair, so I went with them.

I thought it had a nice ring to it.
